From Indians to cowboys to leather to oil and wineries, Nocona exemplifies all that is Texas!

Nocona is named for the Comanche warrior Chief Peta Nocona, who with his wife, Cynthia Ann Parker, were the parents of famed Quanah Parker. However, the area’s distinguished Indian heritage extends back to even before the Spanish exploration of Texas and the nearby Red River.

As the longhorn cattle industry developed in Texas, cowboys herded them along the Chisholm Trail through Nocona and nearby Red River Station for crossing into Oklahoma. Supplying the cowboys with necessary goods like boots, belts, and other leather goods spawned Nocona’s reputation as the “leather goods center of the southwest.”

Although Justin and its subsidiary Nocona Boots relocated years ago, the boot making heritage remains with the Montague Boot Company manufacturing Larry Mahan boots for Cavenders Western Wear. Nokona baseball gloves are also manufactured here and a tour through its factory mirrors this all-American sport and its history.

Nocona is undergoing a wonderful downtown revitalization with new shopping and restaurant opportunities. Additionally, a short distance away is Lake Nocona, with great fishing and water sports capability. And don’t miss the new Tales n Trails museum and our local wineries.
